Introducing Engines
Practice & Progress Suite
Introducing Engines
Master your rhythm, build picking speed, and improvise freely with custom practice routines, downloadable reports, and community support.
Practice Tools
Four engines. One right hand, fully trained.
Every Engine on School of Oud Online targets a different piece of your playing — timing, picking, repertoire, and free expression — so your practice time turns into real, measurable progress. Pick one below to see what it does, why it matters, and how to start using it today.
Every session you run also feeds your live practice Score, shown right at the top of your account, so you can see your total practice time and progress build up as you go.
Engine 01
Iqa'at Engine
Right-hand rhythm training
The Iqa'at Engine is built to train your right hand on the core Oriental rhythms — Maqsum, Baladi, Sa'idi, Ayoub, and more — through focused, timed practice loops. Choose a rhythm, set your tempo, and let the built-in timer keep you playing until the pattern is locked into muscle memory.
- Practice Dum, Tak, and Ta strokes against a live, visual beat pattern so you always know exactly where you are in the cycle.
- Raise the tempo gradually to build right-hand speed and control without losing accuracy.
- Set a 5, 10, or 15-minute practice loop and let the timer hold you to it — consistency is what actually builds the skill.
- Track cycles completed per rhythm and download a practice report to see your progress over time.
Engine 02
Oriental Rhythm Trainer
Explore Masri, Khaliji & Western rhythms
Think of this as your rhythm library and metronome in one. The Oriental Rhythm Trainer lets you browse rhythms across three worlds — Masri (Egyptian), Khaliji (Gulf), and Western — learn what makes each one distinct, and play along at any tempo you choose.
- Switch between genres and rhythms to build a real ear for the differences between Maqsoum, Khaliji grooves, and Western time signatures.
- Adjustable tempo and an on/off metronome let you practice at your own pace, from first read-through to full speed.
- Each rhythm comes with context — time signature and character — so you're learning the "why," not just the pattern.
- Loop playback and count-in options keep practice sessions structured and repeatable.
Engine 03
Picking Pattern Engine
Risha (pick) speed & agility
The Picking Pattern Engine is built to develop a fast, agile right hand through high-speed picking patterns with your risha — the oud pick. Students practice diverse downstroke and upstroke combinations — such as down-up, up-down, up-up-down, and down-down-up — to build muscle memory and steadily increase picking speed.
- Choose from a growing library of stroke-order patterns, from single downstrokes to longer down/up combinations.
- Train speed reserves by pushing your practice tempo above your playing tempo: practicing at 100 BPM makes real-life playing at 50 BPM feel easy, and pushing to 200 BPM makes performing at 100 BPM completely effortless.
- Set your tempo and session length, then run a rep set with a metronome to build clean, even strokes at speed.
- Watch your reps-per-phrase counter fill up in real time, and download a practice report to track which patterns and tempos you've put the most time into.
Engine 04
Improvisation Engine
Free play & jamming
The Improvisation Engine is your jam partner. Pick a backing track, see its maqam, root note, and tempo at a glance, and play freely over it — as if another musician were in the room improvising alongside you.
- Every track shows you its maqam, tonic/root, and tempo up front, so you always know what you're improvising over.
- Preview tracks before you play, and balance music and metronome volume to fit how you like to practice.
- Layer in ambient atmosphere — birds, rain, thunder, ocean waves — to create a calmer, more immersive space for creative playing.
- No timer, no drill — this Engine is built for open, exploratory practice at your own pace.
